What Is Vitamin D?
Vitamin D is produced in our skin when we are exposed to sunlight. It helps our bodies to absorb calcium and phosphorus for healthy bones. It is also needed to support the immune system.
There Are Two Types Of Vitamin D:
- D2 (ergocalciferol): is the plant-derived form1 which is provided by some supplements and found in very small amounts in some mushrooms2
D3 (cholecalciferol): is the type formed by sunlight and found in some food sources, and is thought to be the preferred form as it lasts longer in the body1
Sources Of Vitamin D
Sunlight is the main source of vitamin D. However not all of us get enough vitamin D from sunlight on our skin when we are outside, particularly during the winter months, between October and early March, we don’t get any vitamin D from sunlight.

Vitamin D Deficiency
Having too little vitamin D can be detrimental to the absorption of calcium and phosphorous in the body. This can lead to bone deformities such as rickets in children, and bone pain and tenderness as a result of a condition called osteomalacia in adults.2 Some people get enough vitamin D through exposure to sunlight, but 30−40% of people in Northern Europe are deficient in winter. Most at risk are those with darker skins, babies and young children, adolescents, people over 65 years and those who are not exposed to much sunlight.3
Who Should Take Vitamin D Supplements?
The Department of Health in the U.K. recommends that everyone needs a vitamin D intake equivalent to an average daily intake of 10 micrograms. Children aged 1 to 4 years should have a daily 10 microgram vitamin D supplement, and all babies under 1 year should have a daily 8.5 to 10 microgram supplement to ensure they get enough.4

Babies who receive less than 500 ml of infant formula a day5
Breastfed babies from birth5
All pregnant & breastfeeding woman5
Those aged 65 years or older 5
People with limited sun exposure5
